The Penitent of the Oathbound

He was not forged like the others. He was reforged.

Mordecai was one of the first warriors to walk out of the Eternal Forge after Valdris. Strong, loyal, obedient. He stood his post at the southern wall of the Oathbound Hall for longer than any record can account for. And then, without warning, he left.

No one knows why. No one saw him go. His post was simply empty one morning, and the silence where he used to stand was deafening.

He walked into the Ashen Plains alone, dropped his original weapon into the dust, and disappeared. The Forgemasters considered him broken. Valdris considered him lost.

He returned three years later carrying a flail he had forged himself outside the Eternal Forge. A weapon made without the crucible's fire, hammered cold from scrap metal in the wilderness. That is supposed to be impossible. The metal should have shattered. It didn't.

He spoke one sentence to Valdris when he walked back through the gates: "I left so I could choose to come back."

The Forgemasters did not know what to do with a warrior who had broken the covenant and then voluntarily returned. Valdris did. He gave Mordecai the title of Penitent and assigned him the one duty nobody else wanted: walking the perimeter of the Blackthorn Wilds, the border where the Forge's light ends and Draven's darkness begins.

His armour is darker than any other warrior's. The crescent horns on his helmet are not decorative. They are the symbol of the Penitent order, a rank that only exists because of him. The cross on his chest is the same Oathbound seal every warrior carries, but his is smaller, quieter, half hidden beneath plate. As if the oath is there but no longer shouted. Just kept.

He does not speak to the other warriors. They do not speak to him. But when something moves in the Blackthorn Wilds at night, Mordecai is the first one they look for.
